The Great Scaldwell Cake-Off

Updated: 4 days ago

The weather may have been horrible for the last few weeks but all that was put aside as cakes were entered into the Scaldwell Cake-Off Competition in the Village Hall.

There were 15 entries - 8 in the adult class, 7 in the under 14 class - and the judging panel of Peter Greene, Linda Greene and Trish Stewart had a tough job to select the winners and runners-up. Jo and Chad did a phenomenal shift, accepting cakes at the village hall on an anonymous basis, organising tea and then, as this is Scaldwell, serving drinks at the bar.

Over 50 people turned up to discover the winners at 3pm. Once the judges had pronounced their findings, everyone then tucked into the cakes. The Club chairman, Rob, managed to taste all 15 cakes which was something of an achievement in itself.

A nice feature was that all the adult cakes were different as were all the children's cakes.

The judges took their roles extremely seriously and worked out a systematic approach covering all the characteristics that make a cake a winner.

Hard at work

But in the end there can only be one winner. In the adult class, Lorraine Angus was third, closely behind Dave Angus! But Adele took the prize with her extravagant Black Forest Gateau - a worthy winner.

Scaldwell's Cake Champion!

In the children's class this superb walnut cake was the winner. Well done!
